About Lutheran churches

Lutheran churches descend from the sixteenth-century Reformation begun by Martin Luther and centre on the message that people are made right with God by grace, through faith. Worship follows a liturgy of readings, confession, creed and Holy Communion, usually with strong hymn singing and a sermon on the appointed texts. Congregations belong to synods that differ on some questions of practice, so two Lutheran churches in one town may have noticeably different characters.
