About Pentecostal churches

Pentecostal churches emerged in the early twentieth century and emphasise the present-day work of the Holy Spirit, including gifts such as speaking in tongues, healing and prophecy. Worship is expressive and often lengthy, with energetic music, spontaneous prayer and preaching that expects a personal response. Some Pentecostal churches are independent and others belong to denominations such as the Church of God in Christ or the Foursquare Church.
